The Roman Bridge

16th–17th c. · ≈ 6.5 km from the village

A stone bridge from the 16th–17th century, hidden in the forest 6.5 km from the village. The name is folklore — it has nothing to do with Rome, but the resemblance is striking.

The Roman Bridge

The bridge to the village of Stevrek has nothing to do with Rome and its Roman road builders, but that is how it got its name – because of the resemblance to bridges built in Roman times.

According to people who know about bridges, it was built in the 16th–17th century as part of an important road passing through Stara Planina. I have known about this bridge for many, many years because it is near my father's birthplace and he told me a lot about it. However, it so happened that we went all sorts of places, but a road to it never quite opened – until one spring Sunday.

The village of Stevrek is a small village, but according to the information on the Internet it has quite an interesting history, and judging by the remains of all sorts of old settlements, fortresses and bridges, it is truly a historical place. I won't bore you with history, but if you don't have anything urgent to do, take a look at the detailed account below.
